Block Island lies some 12 miles off the coast of Rhode Island. It was discovered by Adrian Block in 1614 and settled in 1661. The island is 7 miles long and 3 miles wide. Block Island’s 17 miles of beaches are among the most beautiful and unspoiled on the east coast. Many refer to Block Island as “Bermuda of the North.” Stonewalls dot the rolling hills of the lush green countryside, perfect for exploring by bike or hiking the miles of “Greenway Trails.”
Block Island retains its historic appeal by adhering to zoning laws that require new buildings to appear as if they were built in the 1800’s. Over one-quarter of the island is preserved by the Nature Conservancy and will never be developed.
